Important & Botanical Collections
As a new garden, much in the developmental stages, there are many things being learnt as to what will grow in our short growing season, free draining acidic sand soli, with late frosts and snow. While we have adapted to such conditions the range of plants species and types which have been a success is quite remarkable.
There are several hundred different species which can been seen at Auchgourish Gardens including some important collections of certain Genera such as
- Alnus - Arisaema - Betula - Clematis - Iris - Lilium - Malus - Paeone - Primula - Prunus - Pyrus - Rosa - Rubus - Dwarf Salis & Sorbus
We also have some rarely seen species of Rhododendron which although many are still young there are proving very interesting. However due to the climate the large leafed Rhodos are not very successful, the reason being that if the flowers are not frosted by a late frost the winter winds whip off many of the leaves, so we stick mainly to the medium and dwarf Rhodos. |
